Abstract

Introduction: The clinic of the cardiovascular surgery of the Military-medical Academy (MMA) was one of the first who was standing at the forefront of the Soviet cardiac surgery. It became possible thanks to its leader, Academician of the Academy of medical Sciences of the USSR P.A. Kupriyanov who was a talented organizer with brilliant education and sharp mind. 

Aim: to analyze the major milestones of the formation of the cardiac surgery in the MMA of them. S.M. Kirov.

Methods: the analysis of a ten-year experience of cardiac operations. It was found out that the first operations in the MMA started in 1953 and they carried a more palliative character. On the 26th of November in 1954 the first successful operation under hypothermia was carried out. By 1955 the clinic had had the experience of monitoring 149 patients with congenital and acquired heart disease. 94 patients were operated and 24 operations among them were carried out under hypothermia. In 1959 the first successful operation under the cardiopulmonary bypass. In 1963 the first successful mechanical prosthesis mitral valve replacement under the cardiopulmonary bypass was carried out. By the year of 1963 the clinic had had a unique experience of that time - 250 operations under the cardiopulmonary bypass and hypothermia.

Conclusion. Thanks to the leader of the clinic P.A. Kupriyanov the team quickly mastered the main methods of the intratracheal anesthesia, surgical treatment of the congenital and acquired heart disease and the defects of the main vessels. Under the leadership of P.A. Kupriyanov, the clinic was one of the leading centers with its own scientific research laboratory which allowed to perform the most brave experiments, to develop new methods of anesthesia and surgical treatment. All that affected not only the number of the treated patients but also the quality of the treatment.
